Festa de São João do Porto

Porto's greatest night of the year, celebrated every June 23rd for over 600 years. The entire city takes to the streets for the Feast of Saint John — grilling sardines, jumping over bonfires, releasing lanterns into the sky, hitting each other on the head with leeks (or plastic hammers!), and watching midnight fireworks over the Douro. The party runs until sunrise, with the walk from Ribeira to Foz to watch the dawn a beloved tradition.
