The world's most dramatic big wave surfing contest, held on call during winter swells at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, where an undersea canyon amplifies Atlantic storms into 20-metre walls of water. The contest window runs November through March — when a Yellow Alert is issued within 72 hours of a massive swell, the world's top big wave surfers converge for a single day of tow-in surfing that produces some of the largest waves ever ridden.
